2007 Chamard, Rock Wall Vineyard, Pinot Gris - Sold Out
From Chamard Vineyards, comes this first time "limited production" Pinot Gris (less than 100 cases - so don't look for it in your local wine shop). Pinot Gris is directly related to it's more famous brother, the Pinot Grigio of Italy, but is much more like it's twin brother the Pinot Gris' of Oregon fame. It is also celebrated extensively in Alsace.

Chamard has fashioned the most exciting, elegant and polished wine which is very reminiscent of the fine Pinot Gris’ coming out of Oregon. It has the lightest, most delicate straw yellow color. Austerely dry, sexy and beautifully textured. It has a slight aroma of lemon and grapefruit skins in the nose, complimented by hints of a silky, sweet smokiness which, dare I say, bring to mind the Sanceres of the Loire Valley. I know that's saying a lot, but you be the judge. Very nicely balanced soft fruit and inviting acidity.

Maybe it's because our expectations of local wines are always so low, but I believe this is a tour de force and another real breakthrough for the local Connecticut wine industry, and for Chamard Vineyards.
